That One Time The Landscape Changed
pictures by Heleen Heijtema
That One Time the Landscape Changed, a nomadic art program, will be traveling through the province of Groningen between October 2024 and June 2025. Eight young artists are immersing themselves in the landscape, researching the developments and changes, and following the footsteps of De Ploeg. In this and the next three newspapers, the artists will share their research and findings.

De Ploeg is a Groningen-based artists' movement founded in 1918, which flourished during the 1920s and 1930s. The artists of De Ploeg were known for their bold experiments with color, form, and expression, portraying the landscapes, cityscapes, and rural life of Groningen. How do artists today connect with this region and the mindset of De Ploeg?

The nomadic program has an experimental character. Each artist conducts artistic research in their own way into De Ploeg as well as the history, changes, and future of the landscape. From this research on different locations during short residencies they develop new works, which will be exhibited in the final showcase in Wehe-den Hoorn, with the works scattered over the village.

That One Time the Landscape Changed started off with the wadloop wandering, during which all the artists presented a performative work on the mudflats. During the program newspapers are published and spread around the area to share the artists their research, insights and discoveries. There is also a flag, designed by Jeroen Klootsema, that stays at every place where the residencies has settled for a bit, marking the movements of the program in the landscape.

The program is developed, produced and curated by Radina Kordova and Jorien Ketelaar.
